Ciliegiolo is a variety of red wine grape from Italy, named after the Italian for 'cherry'. In the past it has been a component of traditional blends such as Chianti, but with interest revived in recent years it has become its own single bottling.
Ciliegiolo is clonally related to Sangiovese but there is discussion as to whether it’s the parent of or the offspring of Chianti’s main grape.
Some legend claims that Ciliegiolo came to Italy from Spain, but the genetic link between Ciliegiolo and Sangiovese is practically impossible to reconcile with a Spanish origin.

Our Thoughts on this wine.....

Just north of San Gimignano, still family run (fourth generation)
this wine shows deep ruby red color,
with a purple rim given by the richness in the antioxidants.
The aroma is very intense, with vinous, cherry and rose elements.
The taste is balanced between the cocoa, cherry, plum jam
and smooth components,
with an excellent, med-full-bodied structure and a long finish.
