The 2018 Pleinair was made by Gianna Kelly, her winemaking adventures include Lakoya, Mt. Brave and Cardinale! Sourced from two fantastic Napa vineyards:  Stagecoach (running from Prichard Hill to Atlas Peak above Napa to the east) and Bosché on the Rutherford Bench.
It’s 100% Cabernet aged 22 months in a 65% new French oak.
The name refers to the French painters' method of painting outdoors (en plein air), which developed around the same time as Napa's first European-style vineyards in the 1800s.

Unfortunately this is the last bottling for the Galerie brand as it is being discontinued,
it is rumored that the fruit is being moved to the aforementioned brands!

"Made by Gianna Kelly, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Pleinair comes from a handful of vineyards and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon brought up in 65% new French oak.
Its deep purple hue is followed by a rich, concentrated, nicely balanced 2018 with loads of ripe dark fruit, chocolate, and tobacco aromatics, medium to full body, a solid spine of acidity, and just wonderful overall balance and purity, which is the hallmark of this great vintage.
Building nicely with time in the glass, it shines for its balance, elegance, and purity more so than sheer power, and it’s already a joy to drink. Nevertheless, it should easily evolve for 15-20 years.
This smoking value is well worth seeking out."

Made from "100% Cabernet Sauvignon, mainly coming from Stagecoach and Bosché vineyards, the 2018 Pleinair Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was aged for 22 months in French oak barrels, 65% new.
Deep garnet-purple colored, it needs a little swirling to reveal a compelling nose of fresh blackberries, warm cassis, dark chocolate-covered cherries and mulberries with nuances of pencil lead, scorched earth, violets and tar. Medium to full-bodied, it has a firm, grainy texture and very refreshing backbone supporting the bags of crunchy black fruit, leading to a long, fragrant finish. 500 cases were made."

Our Thoughts on this wine.....

Deep garnet-purple colored, opens with rambunctious crème de cassis, plum preserves and lifted notes of candied violets and lavender with touches of spice and cedar chest. You’ll find all the fruit you could want from Napa Cabernet here but also lots of layers of non-fruit notes like lead pencil, wild herbs and violets. Full, rich, concentrated and packed with flamboyant fruit, it has a solid frame of rounded tannins and a long finish. Certainly drinkable now (especially with an hour of air) can hold through 2028-2032. Extraordinary value for the quality.

A few words about Winemaker Gianna Kelly.....

Gianna Kelly grew up in Sonoma County, where she was introduced to wine at an early age—sitting on her father’s knee as he made wine list selections for their family restaurant. She graduated from Santa Clara University with a degree in Chemistry, then initially pursued a career in research that started at the IBM Almaden Research Center. She quickly found that polymers weren’t as alluring as vineyards, and redirected her chemistry skills to the wine industry as a chemist for Enologix in her hometown of Sonoma. A post as enologist for Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars followed, where she fell in love with Bordeaux varieties and honed her winemaking skills by working with Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Most recently, Gianna served as assistant winemaker for St. Francis Winery, working with a wide variety of vineyard sources.

In 2018, Gianna joined the team at Cardinale as an assistant winemaker, and then she became head winemaker for Galerie wines, known for distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc wines from Napa Valley and Knights Valley.
“Making Galerie wines gives me the chance to unite my passion for Bordeaux varieties with my curiosity for the way different vineyard sites express their own unique personalities,” says Gianna. “I enjoy the challenge of developing each small vineyard lot in the cellar and then choosing from a satisfying number of options when it comes time to blend. This helps me create balanced wines that showcase the delightful distinctions between two exceptional wine regions.”
Gianna is no stranger to balance; in addition to nurturing Galerie wines, she’s also raising three small children at home in Sonoma. She loves cooking and entertaining, and her favorite wines combine high quality with an approachability that’s easy to share with others.
