Meet Winemaker Alessandro Locatelli!
 Rocche Costamagna, La Morra Italy

A few years ago Rande had the pleasure of spending a day with Alessandro at his winery tasting thru his wine,
discussing his wineries practices in the field and in the barrel.
To say he was impressed is an understatement,  Alessandro is as knowledgeable as he is passionate,The Shop has been a big supporter ever since.

Rocche Costamagna represents the efforts of one of the most personable and engaging individuals we have had the pleasure to meet.
Alessandro produces Barolo in a traditional style, maturing the wines in large casks in his cellar near the main square at the top of the large hill that marks the entrance to the town of La Morra. Aside from his Nebbiolo based wine wines we also love his Barbera D’Alba and, of course, his Arneis is one of our favorite Italian whites.

Rocche Costamagna Langhe Arneis 2018
Arneis is a white Italian wine grape variety originating from Piedmont, Italy. It is most commonly found in the hills of the Roero, northwest of Alba, where it is part of the white Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) wines of Roero. It can also be used to produce DOC wines in Langhe. Arneis (literally: little rascal, in Piemontese) is so called because it is regarded as a somewhat difficult variety to grow. It is a crisp and floral varietal, and has been grown for centuries in the region.

Full of ripe white peach, green apple, raw almond and savory notes on the palate, the wine naturally often smells of vanilla and white flowers, making it a fantastic sipper. It pairs perfectly with light soft, fresh cheeses, prosciutto, chicken, pork loin, flaky white fish, and pasta with pesto.  Or as they do in the Piedmont, as an apertivo wine. This wine has been one of Steve’s favorites for years!

Rocche Costamagna Barbera d'Alba 2017
Barbera is believed to have originated in the hills of Monferrato in central Piemonte, Italy, where it has been known from the thirteenth century. Documents from the cathedral of Casale Monferrato between 1246 and 1277 detail leasing agreements of vineyard lands planted with "de bonis vitibus barbexinis" or Barbera, as it was known then. However, one ampelographer, Pierre Viala, speculates that Barbera originated in the Lombardy region of Oltrepò Pavese. In the 19th and 20th centuries, waves of Italian immigrants brought Barbera to the Americas where the vine took root in California and Argentina among other places. Recent DNA evidence suggest that Barbera may be related to the French-Spanish vine Mourvedre.

Dark reddish garnet in color, essentially opaque. Full, forward & attractive nose of ripe red fruit aromas of blueberries, cherries & mulberries with overtones of earthy/dusty & floral notes, some spice notes, anise, herbs & minerals. Medium bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, plush, ripe fruit flavors of red cherries, blueberries & plums, herbs & minerals. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & extended airing but has potential for further development with several additional years of aging.

Rocche Costamagna Roccardo
Nebbiolo  2017 (Langhe)

100% Nebbiolo grapes.
The vinification is traditional, with the maceration lasting eight days, followed by ageing for 12 months in large Slavonian oak casks and bottle maturation of at least half a year follows.
In the glass a bright transculent ruby red color. On the medium nose delicate aromas of raspberries, strawberries and blueberries with light floral and earthy hints. On the palate dry, medium+ bodied with medium+ acidity and tannins. Nicely balanced with flavours of raspberries, blackberries and licorice. Already drinkable but will be better within three years. Due to his pleasant character, it is easy to pair with many foods. It’s excellent with meat: braised, roasted, grilled; perfect for cheese.

Regularly priced $19.99 with Special Tasting Table discount $16.99

Rocche Costamagna Barolo

Rocche dell'Annunziata 2014
The Nebbiolo grapes come exclusively from the vineyard “Rocche dell’Annunziata”, one of the historical crus of La Morra. Thevinification again is traditional, with a maceration which can last about two weeks.
The wine is then aged for 24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, and then fined for at least one year in the bottle. Elegant and soft to the palate, it is characterized by the fruity notes of raspberry and a floral and spicy nose.

 93 Points James Suckling
"Congratulations are due because this is deep yet fresh and rather complex wine with some really ripe flavors for a 2014 Barolo.
This has an excellent harmony of richness and tannins. The finish long and focused."

Regularly priced $42.99 with Special Tasting Table discount $36.54

Rocche Costamagna ......

On May 15, 1841, the police office of the royal Military Command in Alba granted Luigi Costamagna, son of the estate's founder Francesco Antonio Costamagna, an official license "to retail the wine produced from his own vineyards" in La Morra. In 1911, Francesco Costamagna and his son Riccardo were awarded a gold medal at the "Gran Premio dell'Esposizione Internazionale di Torino" for fifty years of winemaking.
When Francesco died, his son Riccardo continued to manage the winery with the help of his wife Maddalena. After Riccardo's death in the 1930s, his wife decided to sell the vineyards located outside La Morra. Wine was produced only for the family's own consumption and some grapes were sold to other winemakers.

In the late 1960s, Maddalena's niece, Claudia Ferraresi, together with her husband Giorgio Locatelli, restarted the commercial winemaking activity, planted new vineyards and modernized the old winery.

Since the mid 1980s their son Alessandro Locatelli has been managing the winery with the help of agronomist Gian Piero Romana and enologist Giuseppe Caviola. Alessandro has improved the vineyards and winemaking techniques. He has been developing customer sales all over the world, and so carrying on the family tradition with passion and drawing on the wealth of experience gathered by the family.
